NYPD Officer Shoots Driver of Stolen Vehicle in Bronx

A New York City Police Department officer shot a driver on Sunday who tried to flee after the vehicle was reported stolen, according to officials.

The incident involved a silver Kia Sportage, stolen from the Bronx and later tracked using license plate readers. Police located the vehicle on West Fordham Road.

Officers attempted a traffic stop and repeatedly instructed both the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle. Despite this, the driver reversed, hitting several officers and an unmarked police car, then drove forward, striking another officer.

“As members of the NYPD were around the car, the driver of the stolen vehicle put the car into reverse, hitting one member, hitting one of the unmarked vehicles, and ultimately hitting multiple members of the NYPD,” said Aneudy Castillo, assistant chief and commanding officer of Patrol Borough Bronx North.

The driver continued the attempts to flee, prompting an officer positioned atop a nearby vehicle to open fire, striking the driver.

Both the driver and the involved officers were transported to local hospitals, all in stable condition.

Charges against the driver of the stolen vehicle are pending. The entire incident was captured on body-worn camera and remains under investigation.

The driver, identified as a suspect in previous incidents, was arrested in February for shooting another individual, police stated. He faces multiple felony charges, including attempted felony assault and criminal possession of a firearm.
