Kristen Cruz made a decisive move during a tense match at Oak Street Beach. She pushed the ball toward an open patch of sand, ending a long rally to the crowd’s delight. This point allowed the Austin Aces to take a 12-11 lead in the second set of the AVP Women’s League Championship.
“They were both at the front of the net, and I was back at the line,” Cruz commented. Her attempt to score paid off, bringing the crowd to a high point of excitement. Her partner, Taryn Brasher, praised Cruz’s intuition and skill. The Aces managed to capitalize on their momentum, capturing the title in straight sets against Palm Beach Passion.
Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson, who had the best overall record in the league, secured the runner-up position for the second consecutive year. The duo was notable as silver medalists at the 2024 Paris Olympics in beach volleyball.
On the men’s side, Phil Dalhausser again impressed the audience. Despite a recent calf injury, Dalhausser teamed up with Trevor Crabb to win again. They defeated Chaim Schalk and James Shaw from New York Nitro, continuing their dominance at Oak Street Beach.
With a wrap around his left calf, Dalhausser exhibited six blocks during the championship match. His performance recalled his 2008 Olympic gold medal achievement. Despite playing through discomfort, he focused on teamwork with Crabb to force their opponents into difficult positions.
Earlier in the competition, Dalhausser and Crabb faced the San Diego Smash. A slow start saw Crabb recognize his early game struggles. Dalhausser’s skills turned the tide with a strong service and blocking performance, leading them to victory in the semifinals.
The Aces overcame Miami Mayhem in the women’s semifinals. After trailing at the start, they won 15-8 in the first set and 15-9 in the second. Cruz attributed their success to taking the match point by point and focusing on their side of the court.
