Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary. This race marks a significant clash between progressive and establishment forces within the Democratic Party.
El-Sayed, if elected, could become the first Muslim senator in the United States. He has gained support from prominent figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders. El-Sayed faces moderate opponents, including Rep. Haley Stevens, who is favored by Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer.
The Democratic establishment believes Stevens has a better chance of securing the Senate seat. They worry that El-Sayed’s controversial past statements and progressive policies could jeopardize the seat in a state that was once won by President Donald Trump.
Ocasio-Cortez stated in a New York Times interview, “Despite our ideological differences and whatever disagreements there are in the party, every single one of us sees this moment as existential. And I think many people are willing to put aside differences in order to give us the best chance at winning. And I think that Abdul gives us that right now.” Her endorsement is likely to boost energy among progressive supporters of El-Sayed.
El-Sayed promotes policies like Medicare for All and the abolition of ICE. He is also critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza, labeling them as genocide. He’s committed to refusing PAC donations. In contrast, Stevens benefits from substantial super PAC funding from pro-Israel entities.
State Sen. Mallory McMorrow is the third significant candidate in the race. She positions herself between El-Sayed and Stevens ideologically.
According to polling data, El-Sayed leads the primary contest. Ocasio-Cortez has previously supported him during his unsuccessful 2018 governor run in Michigan.
El-Sayed, referencing Ocasio-Cortez’s backing, told the New York Times, “I’m honored for what her support says about what this campaign is building and what we’re fighting for.” He criticized Schumer, suggesting the Democratic leader does not want him in the Senate.
The Democratic nominee will compete against former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is favored to win the Republican nomination. Rogers narrowly lost the 2024 Senate race to Sen. Elissa Slotkin.
The Michigan Senate race remains closely contested according to political analysts.
The Michigan GOP called Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement “the least surprising political news of the week.” Senior Communications Adviser Greg Manz claimed it represents a choice between “the crazy agenda of AOC and Abdul El-Sayed or the common-sense values of Michigan working families.”
