Recent revelations have stirred an uproar among officials after a Senate committee published text messages on Monday. These messages show Dr. Anthony Fauci expressing a concern about a potential link between fever and other responses to a second COVID-19 vaccine dose and miscarriage during the first trimester. The January 2021 messages, found on Fauci’s government-issued cellphone, indicate that the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) discussed the possibility that fever and other symptoms following a second vaccine dose could be associated with miscarriage.
Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson made the conversation public, with Paul criticizing Fauci on social media platforms. Paul stated that Fauci had been conveying different messages in public and private. He accused Fauci of minimizing the risks vaccines could pose to pregnant women rather than admitting any potential errors in his previous statements.
Senator Paul shared his views on social media, highlighting the inconsistency in Fauci’s communications. “Once again, Anthony Fauci was saying one thing in public and something completely different in private,” Paul wrote. “He was willing to put women and their unborn children at risk instead of admitting that he was wrong about the vaccines that he tried guilting Americans into taking.”
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also expressed his disapproval, accusing Fauci of withholding crucial information that might have endangered pregnant women and their unborn children. Uthmeier reflected on past assurances, “Pregnant women were told it was safe! How many women lost babies due to Dr. Fauci’s lies,” he charged.
Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene went further, suggesting that Fauci should be arrested over these revelations, calling the situation “the most infuriating thing.” In her social media post, Greene alleged, “Fauci knew Covid shots cause miscarriages. And still forced the shots. Fauci belongs in prison.”
Uthmeier questioned whether Fauci’s guidance on vaccinations might have contributed to miscarriages and criticized Fauci for potentially withholding insights about vaccine risks for pregnant women. “If a Covid vaccine can kill a baby and cause a miscarriage, then imagine all the other things it can do to you. And Fauci knew it and still told people to take it,” Greene added in another post.
According to a press release by Senator Johnson regarding the text messages, these discussions could have significant consequences on public health and the principle of informed consent. At the same time, Fauci had previously acknowledged a lack of data or theoretical reason to favor early pregnancy vaccination over later timing. He noted that more than 10,000 pregnant women had been vaccinated without reported complications.
At the time the conversation occurred, Dr. Vivek Murthy also participated, later becoming President Joe Biden’s surgeon general. Murthy pointed out a World Health Organization recommendation against using Moderna’s vaccine in pregnant women due to limited data. He suggested that issuing strong opposition based on insufficient data might harm public confidence.
