A recent cease-fire between the United States and Iran aims to end hostilities in Lebanon. However, U.S. intelligence officials do not anticipate that Israel will cease its strikes on Hezbollah.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to maintain military action against Hezbollah. This is despite the cease-fire agreement’s call for halting the conflict in Lebanon, according to a recent report by U.S. intelligence, as stated by American officials.
Netanyahu faces strong pressure from domestic forces to continue countering Hezbollah’s ongoing assaults on northern Israel. Israel considers Hezbollah, a powerful militia and political entity in Lebanon supported by Iran, as a significant threat and believes their attacks require a response.
U.S. intelligence agencies project that Israel will likely persist with its operations, regardless of the impact on negotiations between Iran and the United States. These talks aim to address aspects of Iran’s nuclear program and secure a lasting peace agreement.
The cease-fire agreement has been met with significant opposition in Israel. Critics argue it fails to tackle Iran’s missile program and mandates U.S. military withdrawal from the region. The restrictions on Israeli military activities in Lebanon are particularly criticized.
While Israel is not a signatory to the agreement, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, confirmed on Friday that Israel has agreed to an immediate cease-fire, ceasing all offensive actions in Lebanon. Leiter emphasized that Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon and reaffirmed that Israel will not compromise its security.
Recent intelligence reports indicate skepticism among American intelligence agencies regarding the durability of these commitments due to ongoing security concerns.
