Oregon School Shooting Leaves Four Dead

On Thursday, a tragic shooting occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon, resulting in the deaths of three children and one adult. The suspected gunman also died, likely from gunfire by a bystander. Federal officials confirmed the fatalities, and Bend police are investigating the incident.

Authorities conducted a thorough evacuation of the school, which typically serves 400 to 450 students with more than 40 staff members. The exact number of people present during the incident remains unclear. Bend Police Department’s communications manager, Sheila Miller, expressed the community’s devastation during a news briefing.

“This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating,” she stated.

The shooting began with a report of a shot fired into a car at around 12:59 p.m., followed by swift responses from law enforcement. Officers arrived on the scene shortly after, with radio reports confirming the suspect’s status as down upon their arrival.

Support and resources flooded into the area from agencies across Central Oregon, including the FBI’s Portland field office. Families were directed to Journey Church for reunification, and the public was urged to avoid the school vicinity.

Silver Rail Elementary is part of the Bend-La Pine school district, offering education from kindergarten through fifth grade. It enrolled 459 students and had around 30 teaching staff for the 2024-2025 school year. No scheduled events were reported on the school’s calendar for the day of the shooting.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent, Steven Cook, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. The focus remains on supporting the students, staff, and aiding law enforcement.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing,” Cook shared in a statement.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the first responders’ swift actions and is closely monitoring the situation. Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Janelle Bynum, both from Oregon, also shared their condolences and concerns about the recurrence of violence at schools.
