Organized Labor Finds New Allies Amid Challenges

Organized labor faces significant trials in 2026. Current economic and political landscapes have reduced its influence. Yet, there is a growing trend of support from both the Left and the Right.

This year remains challenging for labor politics. Several major private-sector union contracts are set to expire by the end of the summer. Contracts include those of 20,000 Verizon workers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, and 25,000 workers in steel mills across the Midwest.

Earlier in the year, Stop & Shop avoided a strike by finalizing a contract agreement with 28,000 food workers in New England. This narrowly averted labor action highlights the ongoing tensions in labor negotiations.
