Packers Weigh Options with Jonathan Taylor Trade Amidst Josh Jacobs Controversy

The Indianapolis Colts are likely to trade Jonathan Taylor by the NFL’s November 10 deadline. The potential trade involves several teams, with the Green Bay Packers showing significant interest. This interest shines a light on the Packers’ willingness to part ways with running back Josh Jacobs, who has faced performance issues and legal troubles.

Reports confirm the Packers are among several teams expressing interest in Taylor. Other teams include the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants. This interest suggests the Packers are looking for more consistent performance from their running game.

Josh Jacobs recently rejoined the Packers after staying on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, following a plea of no contest to charges related to a domestic incident. Despite this, Jacobs is still under NFL scrutiny due to new allegations from three women accusing him of abuse in incidents dating back to 2021.

Jacobs’ legal team has responded, noting the police only proceeded with two misdemeanor charges. However, the NFL is considering a suspension under its Personal Conduct Policy, possibly including the new allegations. This situation adds pressure on the Packers, who continue to support a player facing mounting allegations.

The Packers’ potential acquisition of Taylor presents questions about their current roster choice. Taylor is a leading rusher this season with eight touchdowns. In contrast, Jacobs’ uncertain legal and playing status poses risks.

The trade cost for Taylor is substantial. It is reportedly similar to the 2022 Christian McCaffrey trade, where the San Francisco 49ers sent Carolina several draft picks. If the Packers agree, releasing Jacobs would save approximately $5 million and ultimately around $13 million in cap savings for 2027, despite a dead cap charge.

The financial and legal concerns surrounding Jacobs suggest that signing Taylor would be a strategic and sound move. The Packers’ interest in Taylor signals a plan to enhance their roster while mitigating ongoing legal distractions.
