The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract, extending it by two years and surpassing a half-billion dollars in total compensation. This information was confirmed by ESPN, NFL Network, and a source familiar with the deal, who spoke to The Associated Press under anonymity. The Chiefs typically keep financial terms private.
Mahomes originally signed a 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020, which set a significant standard for football players. This extension now ties him to the Chiefs until the 2033 season, when he will be 38 years old. The contract’s total value is $504.75 million, with potential incentives increasing it to $522.25 million.

The Chiefs and Mahomes frequently adjust his contract to maintain financial flexibility, allowing the team to acquire talent for championship pursuits. This latest adjustment boosts Mahomes’ annual average to $63.1 million, surpassing Dak Prescott’s league-leading $60 million per year.
Mahomes underwent knee surgery last December following a game against the Chargers. He has been diligently rehabbing his injury in Kansas City during the offseason, participating fully in the Chiefs’ programs.

Mahomes aims to be ready for the start of the upcoming season. The Chiefs’ preseason opener against the Rams is on August 15, with their regular season beginning against Denver on September 14.
Since starting in 2018, Mahomes has thrown nearly 36,000 yards and won three Super Bowl titles. The Chiefs faced challenges last season, ending 6-11 after Mahomes was placed on injured reserve.
