Patton Oswalt’s Criticism of Bill Maher
Comedian Patton Oswalt recently voiced his criticism of “Real Time” host Bill Maher regarding Maher’s interactions with President Donald Trump. Oswalt argued that Maher made a mistake in attempting to “placate” Trump, suggesting that it was inevitable for Maher to become a target.
Oswalt shared his thoughts on SiriusXM with host Dean Obeidallah. He compared Maher’s approach with that of anti-Trump hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert. “Colbert and Kimmel… Trump hates them, but he hates them because they don’t love him,” Oswalt said. “He wants them to love him, and then the minute they love him, he has zero respect for them because, deep down, he hates himself.”
Oswalt’s Perspective on Engaging with Trump
Oswalt emphasized that maintaining a critical stance against Trump is ultimately more beneficial. He argued that anyone who engages with Trump risks being “destroyed.” Oswalt believes that even basic greed should motivate others to oppose Trump.
Maher’s Response to Trump’s Criticism
“The reason that Trump is turning on Bill Maher is because Bill tried to, I’m sure with good intentions, placate him and you can’t do that with him,” Oswalt stated.
Bill Maher faced criticism from Trump after continuing his occasional anti-Trump rhetoric following their dinner at the White House last year. Trump lashed out at Maher on Truth Social, mocking him for comments about China potentially ending hockey in Canada. Maher defended himself, saying the dinner was not a “waste of time,” despite Trump’s accusations.
Maher had stated, “[Trump] went off on me and said the dinner we had was a waste of time. Well, I didn’t think it was.” He acknowledged Trump’s criticism about his ratings and perceived nervousness during their meeting.
Discussions on Comedians and Their Trump Stance
Oswalt’s comments referenced the friendship Maher and Jimmy Kimmel used to share before their rift over Trump. Oswalt believes that anti-Trump comedians like Colbert and Kimmel stand firm in their criticism of Trump, which results in Trump’s disdain for them.
Currently, Maher’s “Real Time” show representatives have not provided any response to Fox News Digital regarding the situation.
