Paul’s Family Restaurant Celebrates 65 Years as a Local Landmark

Paul’s Family Restaurant, a longstanding establishment in Elgin, celebrated its 65th anniversary on Friday. Approximately 75 individuals, including friends, family, and local dignitaries, gathered at the restaurant situated at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and McLean Boulevard.

During the celebration, state Senator Cristina Castro referred to the restaurant as an ‘institution.’ She read an Illinois Senate proclamation acknowledging the restaurant’s significance. Castro emphasized the importance of celebrating and preserving businesses like Paul’s, and likened visiting the restaurant to ‘coming home to your family.’

Elaine Paul, the current owner, listened as Senator Castro shared personal memories of dining at the restaurant since childhood. Elgin Mayor David Kaptain also offered similar perspectives, highlighting the rarity of a restaurant thriving for 65 years when many close after just a few years.

Sixty-five years in business in this town and still being successful is incredible, Mayor Kaptain stated.

John and Stella Paul, Greek immigrants, first opened the restaurant in 1961 under the name Douglas Coffee Shop at 158 Division St. in Elgin. With only $200, they launched their 19-seat eatery and later moved to the current location. Elaine Paul took over the restaurant in the mid-1990s to maintain the family legacy when her parents retired.

Elaine highlighted her parents’ dedication to her education, which led her to Northwestern University and a subsequent career in law. When her parents were ready to retire, Elaine opted to continue the family business out of a sense of pride and responsibility. Reflecting on her journey, she said, ‘I thought I’d keep it a few years, and here we are 30-some years later.’ Although her mother, Stella, passed away in 2015, her father John is 97 years old and was diagnosed with stage 1 colorectal cancer earlier this year.

Despite the difficulties imposed by the pandemic, Elaine Paul remains steadfast in upholding her parents’ legacy. She described her efforts as a ‘labor of love’ and a way to honor her parents’ achievements.
