Peabo Bryson, renowned for his Grammy-winning R&B performances and his memorable Disney duets, has passed away at the age of 75. Bryson’s family confirmed his death, which occurred days after he suffered a stroke. They expressed comfort in knowing the profound impact his voice and generous spirit had on countless lives, stating that his legacy will continue through his music for generations.
Bryson’s international fame was solidified through the duets “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle. Beyond these classics, he established a formidable career over five decades as an expert R&B balladeer, achieving hits such as “Feel the Fire,” “I’m So Into You,” and “Can You Stop the Rain.” His incredible voice served as a soundtrack to celebrations, love stories, and moments of comfort for many.
Originally from South Carolina, Bryson began his career in the 1970s with the group Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display before pursuing a solo journey with Atlanta’s Bang Records. He worked with multiple record labels, including Capitol, Elektra, and Columbia Records, and became known for collaborations with other artists, such as Roberta Flack and Natalie Cole. His duet with Flack, “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” remains a quintessential love song from the 1980s. Bryson expanded his reach with songs like “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” and achieved No. 1 R&B hits with “Show & Tell” and “Can You Stop the Rain.”
Apart from his music, Bryson participated in stage productions such as “Raisin,” “The Wiz,” and “Porgy and Bess.” His 21st studio album, “Stand for Love,” produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, marked his return in 2018. Following a stroke in late May, he received medical care, and his family requested privacy during this time, stating that the love, thoughts, and prayers from friends and fans were deeply appreciated.
Bryson had previously recovered fully from a heart attack in 2019. Comedian and TV host Loni Love recounted a memorable conversation on a cruise ship deck, where Bryson shared insightful stories and expressed his deep passion for his music.
The family intends to announce memorial and celebration-of-life arrangements at a future date.
