Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate following a challenging race against Rep. Angie Craig. The Associated Press announced Flanagan’s victory.
Flanagan, known for her progressive stance, was endorsed by prominent figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Her victory aligns with a trend of progressive Democrats succeeding in primaries, as seen in Michigan with Abdul El-Sayed’s recent nomination.
Flanagan, aged 46, shared her personal background of relying on government programs as a child, like food assistance and Medicaid, which helped her rise to the middle class. She committed to defending these programs if elected.
Despite Craig having more funds and benefiting from external advertising, Flanagan’s campaign gained traction with a promise of significant changes. She focused on Craig’s past support for the Laken Riley Act during heightened federal immigration enforcement initiatives. Meanwhile, Craig associated Flanagan with alleged fraud in state government programs.
Flanagan’s platform included the dismantling of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement and expanding Medicare for all. Her vision for change was a key element of her campaign.
On the Republican side, former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya won the primary, as reported by the Associated Press.
