A tragic incident unfolded in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, where Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician, was killed in a stabbing attack at his home. His wife was critically injured during the assault, according to police.
Allegheny County Police reported that a distress call was received at 12:31 a.m. from the 100 block of Linden Avenue. First responders discovered Evans and his wife with multiple stab wounds.
“We do not know if there was any pre-existing relationship,” Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph stated regarding the relationship between the attacker and Evans.
Dr. Evans was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His wife remains in critical but stable condition.
Authorities identified Elijah Hemingway, aged 32, as the suspect. Witness accounts revealed that Hemingway entered the home and attacked the couple while they were sleeping. Evans’ wife awoke to find a man in his underwear attacking them with a kitchen knife. She recounted that the assailant spoke about being “God.”
The couple’s children, aged 8 and 12, were directed by Evans’ wife to seek safety at a neighbor’s house during the attack.
Investigators from the Monroeville Police Department located Hemingway near the crime scene, suffering hand injuries. He is currently hospitalized and will be transferred to Allegheny County Jail once discharged.
The charges against Hemingway include criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain any motive and determine if the two men knew each other.
Dr. Idris Evans served as the medical director for the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
A UPMC spokesperson expressed the institution’s sorrow over the loss of Dr. Evans, describing him as a dedicated caregiver and valued member of the community. Evans’ family, loved ones, and colleagues have been offered condolences during this difficult period.
