Police Officers Face Allegations of Misusing Flock Camera Systems

A number of police officers across the United States are under investigation for allegedly abusing the Flock Safety camera systems. These concerns are part of a larger discussion about privacy and accountability regarding license plate reader technology. Fox News correspondent Danamarie McNicholl reported on these issues during ‘America Reports.’

A former sheriff’s deputy from Indiana, named Skylar Thompson, has been charged related to this misuse. Allegedly, he used the technology to track his girlfriend by conducting over 2,000 searches for her license plate over more than a year. He faces a Level 6 felony count of official misconduct along with a misdemeanor count of fraud.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department discovered the misuse during an internal audit. The audit revealed that Thompson had labeled his searches as ‘city planning/traffic analysis,’ even though he was not assigned to such tasks. Following these findings, the department contacted the Indiana State Police to investigate further. After the investigation, Thompson turned himself in and resigned from his position. He admitted to his actions to his then-girlfriend.

The use of Flock Safety cameras, which serve as license plate readers, has increasingly come under scrutiny. Privacy and misuse concerns are at the forefront of these debates. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office emphasized the responsibility that comes with access to such sensitive tools: ‘Law enforcement officers are entrusted with access to sensitive information, and that access must be used responsibly and only for legitimate law enforcement purposes. No person is above the law, including those entrusted with enforcing it.’

Flock Safety spokesperson Paris Lewbel defended the technology, stating that it serves as a significant tool for public safety. This includes helping to solve serious crimes, locating missing persons, and recovering stolen vehicles. Lewbel expressed support for legislation that maintains privacy, transparency, and accountability, ensuring technology is used appropriately while permitting law enforcement to do their work effectively.
