The Los Angeles Police Department, along with several other agencies, intervened early Saturday morning following reports of an unauthorized street takeover in L.A.’s Harbor Gateway neighborhood near Gardena.
Numerous vehicles converged on South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard. Police reported towing roughly 160 cars, arresting multiple individuals, and recovering six firearms.
Tim McOsker, a councilmember representing the area, informed OnScene.TV that authorities impounded vehicles and detained drivers while issuing citations to other participants. Children present at the event were taken to a nearby police station for pickup by their parents.
McOsker mentioned that around 3 a.m., the police encircled the intersection to prevent participants from escaping. He noted that street takeovers frequently occur in the area, particularly during summer weekends. With Labor Day weekend commencing, the LAPD had prepared for such events.
Law enforcement utilized vehicles to block the intersection, ensuring attendees could not leave the scene. Video footage from OnScene.TV also featured Homeland Security Investigations agents, part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, present at the location.
When asked about Homeland Security’s involvement, McOsker stated he was unaware of their role, emphasizing that this was a local police operation aimed at halting street takeovers.
The situation highlights the ongoing challenge of addressing street racing events in Los Angeles neighborhoods, particularly during holiday periods when such activities tend to increase.
