Pope Leo XIV Expresses Gratitude Following Surgery

Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude to the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square for their prayers during his recent health challenge. After undergoing surgery to remove a malignant tumor, he is gradually resuming his duties. Showing a strong voice, he addressed the faithful from a window overlooking the square.

Last week, the Pope shared the discovery of a nodule on his lung. It necessitated surgery which involved the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung. Following the operation, he voiced his closeness to others battling illness and infirmity.

Pope Leo XIV addressed the worshippers during the Sunday Angelus prayer in Vatican City, expressing gratitude for the support felt from all, especially the medical team at Gemelli Hospital.

A delegation from Africa, in Rome for a congress, celebrated the Pope’s recovery with dance and song, expressing joy for his return. Alain Kalembu from the Democratic Republic of Congo highlighted their prayers for him during his illness.

Aged 71, this was the first major health issue of Pope Leo XIV’s 17-month pontificate. The surgery confirmed adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer. He briefly engaged with reporters, affirming his improved condition following a shorter hospital stay than expected.

The crowd at the Vatican included American tourists, excited to pray alongside the first US-born Pope. Marla Marsala from Michigan expressed happiness for the Pope’s swift recovery and strong spirit. Claire Holland from Florida felt blessed witnessing his return.

His upcoming itinerary involves an ambitious trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from Nov. 6-17, with numerous flights and helicopter rides planned. His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, sees no clinical reason to prevent this journey.

Histological testing of the tumor and lymph nodes is ongoing. The results, along with genetic analysis, will guide further treatment like chemotherapy or immunotherapy, depending on the tumor’s genetic profile.
