The Port Clinton Art Festival in downtown Highland Park drew about 300 artists and thousands of attendees this year. Among them was Aurora artist Mays Mayhew, who showcased her diptych piece ‘Headwinds Tailwinds’ and remarked on the significant role of art in expressing hopes and memories. She emphasized the emotional stories behind her works, attracting many visitors to her booth.
Saturday, August 29, 2026, marked the start of the festival with overcast skies turning sunny, providing a perfect backdrop for the two-day event. Amy Amdur, the president of Amdur Productions, highlighted the importance of community support in making the event successful. She founded Amdur Productions in 1984, focusing on the promotion of fine arts festivals. This year’s festival supported nonprofit organizations WINGS Program Inc. and PFLAG, both providing vital community services.
Music also played a significant part in the festival, with various performers appearing on three stages throughout the weekend. Allie Kessel from West Town, Chicago, honored Dolly Parton by singing ‘Jolene,’ acknowledging the recent passing of the iconic artist. Comments from Amdur reflected the soothing and healing power of art and music, appreciating Dolly Parton’s influence.
Nearby, Jesse Kunerth from Pittsburgh presented a digital portrait of Dolly Parton, priced at $300. This was Kunerth’s first appearance at the festival. He also offered prints that were popular among visitors. The inclusion of Dolly Parton in his collection was inspired by her significant contributions and philanthropic efforts.
“Oh man, she’s a great person, does so much good work and just like her books that she mailed to kids, she’s just a good person,” Kunerth shared.
Amy Amdur reflected on the resilience and unity that art brings, especially important after past local tragedies. The July 4, 2022, Independence Day parade shooting in Highland Park remained a poignant memory. Amdur highlighted how art continues to unite and strengthen the community.
