The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a GOES-19 GeoColor satellite image showing a storm system forming along the Gulf Coast of Texas as of Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Meteorologists from the National Hurricane Center warned that this storm cluster could become the first named tropical storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
The developing system posed a significant threat of heavy rainfall, risking dangerous flooding across southern states such as Texas and Louisiana. It was located approximately 55 miles south-southwest of Corpus Christi, Texas, according to a recent advisory from the hurricane center.
Director of the National Hurricane Center, Michael Brennan, noted that meteorologists anticipate the system may strengthen into a tropical storm by early Wednesday. However, even without reaching that official status, coastal regions might experience tropical storm conditions this week. Brennan emphasized the primary threat from these systems is often the flooding caused by intense rainfall. Forecasts indicate the potential for life-threatening flash and urban flooding from the Texas coast eastward into central Mississippi through Thursday. Continued rain could prolong the flood risk into the weekend.
Forecasters also highlighted the risk of tornadoes extending from the upper Texas coast across southern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. By Tuesday, the storm’s maximum sustained winds were near 30 mph, close to the 39 mph threshold required to designate it as a tropical storm. The hurricane center estimated a 70% probability of the system developing into a tropical cyclone within the next two days.
In Houston, preparations were underway due to a flood warning in effect since Monday. The city is set to host a World Cup match between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday, in a covered stadium. No changes have been announced regarding the match schedule.
Heavy rainfall could result in 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of rain by Thursday, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to a foot (30 centimeters). A tropical storm watch was active from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana. Additionally, the next few days may bring rough surf and rip currents along the Gulf Coast.
