Power Ballad introduces Rick Power, portrayed by Paul Rudd, as a devoted husband and father. Despite his previous experience in a pop band with a record deal, he now sings in a popular wedding band in Ireland. His journey began when he toured, met a woman, and established his life in Ireland. Rick’s work leaves people happy, making him more successful in some ways than he acknowledges.
At a wedding, Rick encounters Danny Wilson (Nick Jonas) — a former boy band member seeking a solo career. Both men share a connection through music and spend the night sharing songs. Among them, Rick performs an unfinished ballad titled “How To Write A Song Without You.” Months later, Rick discovers the song playing at the mall, released as a single by Danny, who amended it with a bridge. When Rick requests credit, Danny, through his management, denies the claim, leaving Rick without proof.
While Power Ballad initially seems focused on credit and money — areas not typical for director John Carney — the film revolves around Rick’s years in music with little tangible proof of his talent. The movie shifts the perspective to Rick’s realization of having written a hit loved by the masses, despite his situation.
Desiring credit often seems petty, especially when money is involved. Yet, Danny’s denial feels equally unethical. Danny’s character is nuanced; less villainous, more cowardly, as his image deteriorates amid a threatening manager. By the time Rick seeks clarity, Danny’s success with the song makes truth acknowledgment difficult.
The film highlights art’s complexity and cautions against shortcuts. Danny’s commercial success with Rick’s song ends empty since he feigns authorship. Being talented and aspiring to stardom, Danny understands fame’s acquisition, yet lacks ownership of the song, thereby missing the essence songwriters cherish.
Completing a songwriting endeavor should not hinge on money and recognition, but must begin with originality. Without genuine intellectual contribution, stars cannot grasp songwriters’ authentic experience regardless of venue size.
Although not centered on AI, the movie alludes to satisfaction derived from personal creation over attribution of non-human works. Danny’s story conveys that even if one hasn’t composed something, the creator’s effort brings meaning — highlighting the legitimacy of performers who rely on others’ compositions.
Featuring a credible pop hit and strong performances by the leads, the film delivers a bittersweet but fulfilling conclusion. Carney’s narrative emphasizes honesty and authenticity’s importance in art and life, surmising genuine one-hit wonders find more fulfillment than deceitful superstars.
