Power Ballad Review: Musical Rivalry Unfolds

The trailer for Lionsgate’s “Power Ballad,” starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, directed by John Carney, promises engaging music-driven drama. The story centers on Rick Power, played by Paul Rudd, an American wedding singer in Ireland. Previously the frontman of a rock band, Rick now faces a more subdued life after marriage and becoming a father.

During a performance, Rick attempts to revive an old rock song, only for his drummer to remind him they’re human jukeboxes, not rock stars. His band, The Bride and Groove, plays a wedding gig attended by Danny Wilson, portrayed by Nick Jonas. Danny, like Rick, struggles with a past as a former boy band singer. An opportunity arises for Danny to join the band for a song, leading to a quick camaraderie with Rick.

As they jam together, both share song ideas. Danny admires Rick’s work on “How to Write a Song Without You.” Back in Los Angeles, Danny’s manager, played by Jack Reynor, pressures him for a hit song to maintain his lifestyle.

Rick later hears Danny’s chart-topping hit in a mall, recognizing it as his own creation. A music battle ensues as Rick seeks acknowledgment for the song’s success, despite lacking evidence. This conflict impacts Rick’s family life.

Performances by Rudd and Jonas are engaging, and Beth Fallon shines as Rick’s daughter, Aja. John Carney’s knack for music-themed storytelling continues, though “Power Ballad” doesn’t reach the acclaim of “Once” or “Sing Street.” Despite some narrative wandering, the film concludes with a satisfying reception from audiences.

“Power Ballad” provides entertainment through humor and music. While it may not be Carney’s best, it effectively showcases Rudd’s and Jonas’s talents, leaving viewers entertained.

Rating: ★★★ — Recommended to stream later.
“Power Ballad” is rated R for language and some drug use. The runtime is 1 hour and 38 minutes.
