Powerful storms this week have caused outages from Oklahoma to Connecticut. As of Sunday, over 800,000 customers were still without electricity. More severe weather is predicted, raising concerns about strong winds and possible flooding.
Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York account for most power failures, based on data from PowerOutage.com. Around 85,000 customers in New York remain affected.
In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani used social media to highlight dangerous temperatures, noting the World Cup match between Brazil and Norway set in New Jersey. “These past few days have been scorching, back-to-back 100-degree days, brutal humidity,” he remarked. Cooling centers in the city are available for relief.
Chris Hoenig, a spokesman for Jersey Central Power and Light, reported that power for 210,000 out of 294,000 affected customers in New Jersey has been restored. He expects most remaining outages to be resolved in the next three days.
