President Donald Trump announced that he had a productive conversation with Britain’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, shortly after he assumed office. Trump described the discussion as “very good” and revealed plans for a meeting in the near future to explore mutual interests.
The phone conversation between Trump and Burnham focused on the enduring U.S.-U.K. relationship and the challenges Burnham faces as he begins his tenure. Trump assured American support, stating they covered various topics, including the historically strong U.S.-U.K. ties.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham acknowledged the significant responsibilities ahead but expressed confidence in tackling them, with Trump pledging U.S. assistance.
The two leaders also discussed North Sea oil, trade, the U.S.-U.K. military alliance, and initiatives to remove mines from the Strait of Hormuz, according to Trump.
Burnham’s team issued a statement after the call, indicating the Prime Minister’s eagerness to host Trump in Manchester during a forthcoming visit. Downing Street noted Trump provided updates on the Middle East situation, while Burnham confirmed the U.K.’s dedication to reopening the Strait of Hormuz safely.
The British administration emphasized the importance of securing shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz to bolster global supply chains and lower costs for businesses and families in Britain. Burnham reiterated that defense and security would remain a priority for the U.K. in collaboration with its allies.
Focusing on domestic issues, Burnham committed to efforts to reindustrialize and stimulate economic growth throughout the nation. Trump remarked that the conversation was a significant success.

On Monday, Burnham became the seventh British Prime Minister in a decade, determined to reshape a nation accustomed to frequent leadership changes. He succeeded Keir Starmer, who held office for over two years since summer 2024.
The two leaders have previously exchanged criticism; Trump characterized Burnham as “extremely liberal,” and Burnham has openly criticized Trump.
