President Donald Trump extended his best wishes to Pope Leo XIV for a swift recovery from lung surgery. The pope underwent surgery after a diagnosis of lung cancer, specifically lung adenocarcinoma, which involved removing part of his right lung.
From Air Force One during a trip between Arizona and Montana, Trump expressed hope for a good recovery for the 71-year-old pontiff. ‘I want to see Pope Leo get well. I hear the prognosis for that type of a problem. It’s a cancer. It’s big stuff. Anytime you have cancer,’ Trump stated. ‘But the prognosis seems to be good. We just want to wish him our love and our best wishes.’
Trump also discussed his friendship with the pope’s brother and sister-in-law, who are fervent supporters of the president. ‘His brother is a friend of mine, who’s a great — he’s a fantastic guy — and his wife. They’re big Trump supporters. They have MAGA all over their house,’ he mentioned. ‘I can say that his brother loves him a lot. Loves the pope a lot, and that’s good, but I just want to wish him well. Get better fast.’
The Vatican had earlier announced Pope Leo’s diagnosis after his surgery at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. The procedure was completed without complications and took about 90 minutes. The cancer was confirmed via examination of tissue collected during the surgery, aligning with prior tests.
Pope Leo had previously revealed that doctors had found a small lump in his lung at an early stage, leading to the recommendation for surgery. Post-operation, he awoke normally and returned to his hospital room for further observation. The surgery meant to ensure a proactive approach was recommended by medical professionals.
In addition to Trump’s comments, the pontiff had engagements with influential figures such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is praised by Trump for his diplomatic capabilities.
