On Thursday, President Donald Trump addressed Minnesotans, urging them to “fight back” against Somali immigrants in the state. His statements followed federal charges against a Somali American man accused of plotting a terror attack at the Mall of America.
In his Truth Social post, Trump claimed that Minnesota was “being taken over” by Somali immigrants and cited widespread violence and chaos in the state. He called for Minnesotans to resist these changes.
You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government. Your Governor is an incompetent thief who doesn’t want to get involved. He just wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal, and then, lead a quiet life,” said Trump, criticizing Democratic Governor Tim Walz. “The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!
Trump’s comments came in response to the recent announcement by the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding the arrest of Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud. The 18-year-old, a U.S. citizen of Somali descent, was accused of engaging with a source online for nearly two years about traveling to Somalia to join a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Authorities believed he intended to return and conduct an attack in Minnesota.
The president has frequently criticized Governor Walz for his approach to alleged fraud linked to the Somali community. In late 2025, an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents.
Newsweek sought clarification on the president’s statements, reaching out to the White House. They also contacted Governor Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Minnesota’s Democratic Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar for their comments.
