Tennessee’s governor, Bill Lee, has proposed a name change for Nashville International Airport. The proposition was made shortly after the passing of iconic country music star, Dolly Parton, due to cancer at age 80.
“At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness,” Lee stated.
Governor Lee has already started discussions with Dolly Parton’s representatives about the renaming. This proposal aligns with the desires of more than 157,000 fans who signed an online petition supporting the airport’s renaming. The petition gained backing from Tennessee state Rep. Todd Warner and singer Sheryl Crow.
Currently, Nashville International Airport showcases its rich country music heritage with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Grand Ole Opry outposts.
Examples of other U.S. airports named after notable individuals include President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Florida, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, and John Wayne Airport in California.
Dolly Parton’s journey from poverty in the Smoky Mountains to becoming a cross-generational icon is celebrated not only for her music and films but also for her ability to unite people across different backgrounds. Her hits include “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” and she is known for roles in films like “9 to 5.”
The proposal may require the Metro Nashville Airport Authority to reconsider its naming policy, which currently requires a two-year waiting period after a person’s death. The airport authority will discuss this at their meeting on September 17.
Further honoring Parton’s legacy, Tennessee state Sen. Jessie Seal has introduced legislation to designate September 25 as “9 to 5” Day, acknowledging one of Parton’s most famous songs.
