A month before the tragic murders of Juri “Julie” Kibuishi and Samuel Herr, Rachel Buffett was reportedly planning her bachelorette party. During this time, a former friend, Audrey, recounted an instance where Buffett encouraged her to take ecstasy.
“Well, if I slipped it in your drink, you wouldn’t know about it,” Buffett allegedly said, according to Audrey.
This incident prompted Audrey to end her friendship with Buffett. Audrey shared her story in the Investigation Discovery series “A Killer Among Friends.” Rachel Buffett, who was engaged to convicted killer Daniel Wozniak, was later found guilty of two felony counts of being an accessory after the fact but was not accused of directly participating in the murders.
Audrey described the dynamic between Buffett and Wozniak as tense when they were intoxicated. She shared her distress over Buffett’s remark about drugging her, saying it felt like more than an idle joke. Audrey decided to distance herself from Buffett, declining to attend her wedding as a bridesmaid.
Shortly after the friendship ended, Kibuishi was found dead in Herr’s apartment, and Herr himself was missing. Evidence soon pointed away from Herr as the suspect. Investigators uncovered that a teenager, Wesley Freilich, was withdrawing money using Herr’s ATM card. He revealed Wozniak had given him access to Herr’s account. Wozniak was then arrested at his bachelor party and confessed to the murders, citing “money and insanity” as his motives.
Despite the estrangement, Audrey reached out to Buffett after the arrest. She expressed sympathy for Buffett’s situation, only to be rebuffed and accused of seeking “five minutes of fame.”
Wozniak’s conviction was driven by his financial strain despite having other responsibilities and support. Prosecutors revealed Wozniak attempted to frame Herr for Kibuishi’s murder but later admitted to both killings, revealing his motive was to steal $62,000 from Herr.
The case was further complicated by Buffett’s actions post-murder. Despite claiming innocence, she was convicted for misleading police during their investigation. Her sentence was 32 months in jail.
Audrey reflected on how this experience has influenced her view on friendship. She stresses the importance of distinguishing between “nice” and “good” in relationships. The case remains a notable example of betrayal, deceit, and the surprising complexities of personal relationships.
