Raman Challenges Bass’ Homelessness Initiative

City Councilmember Nithya Raman participated in a debate with Mayor Karen Bass, expressing her concerns about the Inside Safe initiative for homelessness. Raman criticized the program as being too expensive and ineffective. She felt compelled to challenge Bass due to what she perceives as failed efforts in Los Angeles.

I decided to push back against a system that I saw was failing Los Angeles,

Raman stated. She emphasized the urgency for change and the city conditions she considers unacceptable.

Under the Inside Safe initiative, over 6,000 people have been moved into interim housing. However, the program has not sustained long-term results, with 42% returning to homelessness by July this year, according to data from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

Bass defended the initiative and pointed out that Raman had supported many of her proposals, including funding measures for Inside Safe over the past three years:

Every dollar that was spent on Inside Safe was approved by you,

Bass noted during the debate.

Bass Emphasizes Homelessness Efforts

During a debate, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass emphasized her focus on addressing homelessness, pitching to undecided voters. She stated that the homelessness crisis in L.A. motivated her bid for mayor.

Nithya Raman contested Bass’ claims by arguing that residents don’t feel any improvement compared to four years ago. Raman has committed to reducing unsheltered homelessness by 50% before the 2028 Olympics and eliminating it by 2030.

We’ve had a mayor who has been M.I.A.,

Raman asserted, voicing concerns over Bass’ efforts. Despite Bass making homelessness a priority, the numbers have increased recently by 7.9% due to reduced funding and inadequate services.

Voter Decision Challenges

Mayor Karen Bass alerted voters to weigh their choices seriously. She raised questions about Raman’s record, accusing her of voting against police support and allowing encampments near schools.

To go with this candidate is really taking a serious risk,

Bass stated. The upcoming election presents a significant decision for voters.

Debate’s Key Points

The mayoral contest between Bass and Raman sees its final debate moderated in collaboration with Loyola Marymount University. Several focal points include Raman’s position on the Police Chief and her readiness on the debate stage. Attendees will also watch if wildfire management becomes a topic, as Bass faced criticism over it before the primary.

This debate could be pivotal for undecided voters. It’s scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., streamed by NBC4, Telemundo 52, and LAist FM. Follow live coverage for in-depth analysis.
