A dime you might find in your piggy bank typically has a value of 10 cents. However, its rare ancestors can reach astronomical prices. An upcoming auction might see a dime, estimated at $1.5 million, fetch a staggering sum. Known as the 1894-S Barber Dime, this coin could sell for 1.5 million dollars, vastly surpassing its original value.
The coin was minted in San Francisco over a century ago and is part of the Barber series. These coins, designed by engraver Charles E. Barber, began production in the 1890s. Dimes featuring Barber’s design have previously sold for hundreds to thousands of dollars, but the ones minted in San Francisco in 1894 are particularly coveted.
According to Numismatic News, there are only nine known examples of the 1894 dimes still in existence, including the one that will be auctioned at the Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Rarities Night. Initially, only 24 of these dimes were produced. Three were tested through assaying, leaving just 21 in circulation. The fate of 12 of these remaining coins is unknown.
Recent transactions highlight the value of these rare coins. One of these dimes sold for $2.16 million last year, following a previous sale for nearly $1.998 million in 2016. Another dime was auctioned in 2020 for $1.5 million, which had sold for $1.035 million in 2005. The initial bidding for the upcoming sale of the dime will start at $1 million, with online bidding commencing on September 1.
These rare dimes stand out due to their historical significance and scarcity. Auction records from Heritage Auctions indicate that a dime minted in 1873 sold for $3.6 million as part of a rare group marked for melting under the Coinage Act of 1873. It was considered the ‘sole survivor’ of that batch.
Coins minted as early as 1792, also known at the time as ‘dismes,’ are highly prized with only three known examples held by collectors. The ‘finest-known example’ sold for nearly $999,000 in 2016.
Distinguishing between an ordinary dime and a valuable one may be challenging. Dustin Johnson, vice president of numismatics at Heritage Auctions, advises consulting an expert if you suspect you possess a valuable coin.
