Real American Freestyle (RAF) has increased its popularity since its inception last year. Founded by the late Hulk Hogan, Chad Bronstein, Izzy Martinez, and Eric Bischoff, the league aims to bring professional freestyle wrestling to a wide audience both in the United States and internationally. Notable champions like Wyatt Hendrickson and Kennedy Blades highlight the growing talent in RAF.
The league caught attention when Bronstein and Martinez disclosed to MMA Fighting plans to possibly involve NFL legend Ray Lewis in a match before year’s end. Although no agreement was finalized, discussions were seen as positive. Former WWE star Kurt Angle, known for his Olympic gold medal and NCAA All-American status, shared his skepticism with OutKick Dropkick. “I’m not sure if Ray would stand a chance against world-class opponents,” Angle stated on behalf of Gambling.com. He acknowledged Lewis’s high school wrestling experience but doubted a real match could happen.
“Every match in Olympic-style wrestling is real. If he does wrestle, I hope he doesn’t get hurt,” Angle noted, referencing Lewis’s age and athletic background.
Ray Lewis, 51, previously excelled as a Florida state wrestling champion before shifting focus to his illustrious football career. Despite skepticism, enthusiasts remain hopeful about his involvement with RAF.
Angle, who briefly served as an RAF commentator, expressed optimism for the organization’s future. “Budget cuts led to my departure, but without hard feelings,” Angle told OutKick Dropkick. He praised the RAF’s international expansion, comparing it to the growth of organizations like WWE and UFC.
“They’re traveling globally, hosting events in locations like Russia, Europe, and India. Wrestling’s popularity varies, flourishing in Eastern Europe, Asia, and India,” he explained. RAF’s strategy includes signing talents worldwide, positioning it as a dynamic force in freestyle wrestling.
Real American Freestyle airs on Fox Nation. The upcoming RAF14 event is set for October 23 in Las Vegas.
