Recount Shifts Indiana Senate Primary Result in Trump’s Favor

In Indiana, a recount has shifted the result of a contested May state Senate primary, favoring Republican Paula Copenhaver, who had President Donald Trump’s support. Copenhaver has surpassed incumbent Spencer Deery. Originally, Deery was one of seven GOP state Senators facing primary challenges for opposing a congressional map Trump backed last year. Out of these, five were defeated, while Deery retained a slim three-vote lead, which Copenhaver contested.

On Monday, the Indiana Recount Commission discarded ten votes due to minor errors; eight votes for Deery and two for Copenhaver. This adjustment gave Copenhaver a three-vote advantage, as reported by the Indiana Capital Chronicle. Deery expressed his intention to appeal the decision, describing it as an effort to “undermine the will of voters by treating ballots differently based on whether they furthered the president’s political goals.” He noted that none of the ballots were dismissed due to doubt about voter intent, as the disputes focused on technical issues caused by official errors.

Deery stated his belief that Indiana’s appellate courts will restore the original vote counts. He highlighted that voter intent was clear and none of the challenged ballots were in question regarding their support. Meanwhile, Copenhaver, an aide to Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, did not respond to comments.

If her victory holds through appeal, Copenhaver would likely win in the general election within the heavily Republican Senate District 23. Competing against her are Democrat West Lafayette City Councilman David Sanders and independent Joshua Brant.

As the new state Senate takes shape, the issue of redistricting could be revisited before the 2028 election. Indiana Senate President Rod Bray, who opposed Trump’s map, announced he won’t seek another term as a Republican leader.

Trump acknowledged the recount’s results with a statement on Truth Social. He thanked Indiana for its past electoral support and emphasized the removal of Senators who opposed his redistricting plans.
