Boston Red Sox rookie pitcher Payton Tolle made a remarkable start on Sunday against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park. Tolle, known for his iconic mustache, achieved an immaculate inning in the game’s opening frame, delighting the home crowd.
In a rain-delayed match, Tolle retired the top of the Royals’ lineup using only nine pitches. His strategy focused on attacking the strike zone with precision. Of the nine pitches, eight were four-seam fastballs complemented by one sinker. Before executing the final pitch, Tolle exchanged a confident glance with the catcher, fully aware of the potential achievement within reach. He then struck out Jac Caglianone, completing the immaculate inning.
The milestone marked the 125th immaculate inning in Major League Baseball and the eighth in the history of the Red Sox, with the last achieved by Chris Sale in 2021. Tolle became the first to do so in the first inning for Boston since Pedro Martinez faced Seattle in 2002.
The young left-hander continued his strong performance throughout the game, pitching six shutout innings with four hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts on 96 pitches. The Red Sox secured a 4-1 win over the Royals.
With this game, Tolle’s total of 166 strikeouts ranks him second among rookies in Red Sox history, trailing only Daisuke Matsuzaka’s 201 strikeouts in 2007.
Aside from his on-field performances, Tolle recently voiced his opinion on the trend of limiting starters with strict pitch counts. “I would probably consider myself more on the old-school side of it,” he stated, emphasizing his preference for allowing starters to pitch as long as possible, aiming for complete games—a quality he feels is diminishing in modern baseball.
Tolle’s perspective and performance are noteworthy as the Red Sox pursue a spot in the American League wild card, showcasing the value of a pitcher eager to take on extended innings.
