Friday marked an unforgettable day for Lincoln-Way West’s Reese Rourke in her softball career. Returning for only her second game this season after an extended absence, she hit two home runs, propelling her team to a historic victory. Rourke, a senior shortstop, turned an improbable dream into reality.
Rourke’s elation was evident as she helped her team secure a 2-1 victory against Lockport in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way West Sectional championship in New Lenox. “After the first one, I cried a little bit,” Rourke admitted. “I was just so happy. After the second one, it was pure joy.” Her performance included going 3-for-3, delivering two home runs and a double for Lincoln-Way West (27-7). Paige Seivert contributed two hits, while Abby Brueggmann claimed the win on the mound.
Lincoln-Way West’s Reese Rourke was decisive in tracking down a fly ball against Lockport during the championship. On Friday, May 29, 2026, she showcased skill and determination to lead her team.
Taylor Lane led Lockport (24-13-1) with three hits. Giavanna DiCiolla added an RBI single, and Bridget Faut struck out four. This sectional championship was a first in the program’s history. The Warriors are now set to face Edwardsville (29-9) at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Illinois Wesleyan Supersectional.
Rourke’s teammates didn’t hold back their excitement when she hit her first home run in the bottom of the first. “We were just exploding in the dugout,” Brueggmann shared. The emotion was palpable when Rourke, overwhelmed, started tearing up, prompting her teammates to rejoice.
Brueggmann praised Rourke, calling her the hardest worker she’s known. As best friends who spend extensive time together, Brueggmann was thrilled to witness Rourke achieve this milestone.
Rourke’s comeback journey is inspiring. Starting the season with several team records under her belt, she quickly faced adversity. In her second game, she was unable to continue due to a wrist injury. “I couldn’t squeeze my hand,” Rourke remembered, emphasizing the intense pain.
Rourke required surgery for a fractured right wrist. Although she was able to play defense, she only returned to batting in the sectional semifinal against Lincoln-Way Central, where she contributed with a double. Unfulfilled, she sought out past performances for inspiration. “I went home and watched videos of myself hitting,” she said. Visualization helped her regain her form.
In Friday’s game, she starred with a double in the third inning and a critical home run in the sixth. Her performances provided a narrow margin for Brueggmann, who stood strong by striking out three and leaving nine runners stranded.
Despite the challenges, Rourke grew into an essential shortstop after initially being the ace pitcher. Brueggmann’s contributions ensured Rourke could shine in her chosen role. “I want her there—I need her there,” Rourke asserted about her position. Coach Heather Novak felt a surge of emotions remembering Rourke’s determination overcoming her injury. “She was so mature and responsible,” Novak stated. “I’m just so happy for her.”
Rourke’s journey and contributions have etched her name in Lincoln-Way West’s history, resonating with passion and triumph.
