Nearly three decades have passed since the discovery of human bones at Fox Hollow Farm. The estate was once owned by Herb Baumeister, a suspected serial killer believed to have murdered numerous men in Indiana. Fresh inquiries have resurrected questions about what happened at the sprawling property.
I have had an opportunity to speak with Mark Goodyear a couple of times,stated Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison.The first question I would ask him is, ‘Are you ready to be honest with me?’
Jellison’s efforts aim to identify the remains found on Baumeister’s former estate. He believes Mark Goodyear, a crucial figure in the case, has not been entirely truthful in past conversations. Goodyear, who Jellison claims knows a lot about the case, has been questioned numerous times but maintains his innocence, never having been charged with any crime related to Fox Hollow Farm.
The ABC News documentary, Return to Fox Hollow: New Victims, Darker Secrets, features Jellison’s attempts to uncover further details. In the documentary, theories of potential accomplices and overlooked evidence are explored. Goodyear, who describes himself as Baumeister’s sole survivor, allegedly escaped a similar fate experienced by the victims identified in the investigation.
Investigators were alerted to the upsetting possibility that Baumeister filmed his victims, as Goodyear described videos that he was forced to watch. Despite these claims, the tapes, if they existed, have not been recovered.
Fox Hollow Farm became the epicenter of grim discoveries when an estimated 10,000 human bones and fragments were unearthed on the 18-acre estate. Before any arrest occurred, Baumeister was found dead by suicide in Ontario, Canada. Police reports state Baumeister preyed on men from Indianapolis gay bars, luring them to his secluded home under false pretenses.
There remains an immense challenge to identify more than 9,000 bones yet to be thoroughly examined. Investigators suspect up to 25 individuals were killed by Baumeister. Jellison emphasizes his belief that more than one person might have been involved, noting the difficulty of transporting victims through dense woodland.
Jellison is committed to naming the unknown victims. He suspects some families may be unaware of their loved one’s disappearance, complicating identification efforts. A public service held for identified victims underscored the importance of closure for affected families.
Through comparisons to large-scale investigations like the World Trade Center, Jellison highlights the complexity of the Fox Hollow case. Unlike the organized records of the former, the investigation at Fox Hollow begins with unidentified remains.
Jellison continues to urge potential witnesses or those with missing loved ones to contact his office. Following a previous documentary, he received close to 500 communication attempts seeking information.
