Rep. Chris Pappas has secured the Democratic Senate nomination in New Hampshire, representing a critical race for the Democrats during the midterm elections. In the primary, Pappas defeated Karishma Manzur, a socialist candidate and newcomer, as reported by the Associated Press.
This election fills the seat of retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. Despite Republicans not winning a Senate seat in the state for 16 years, they view this open seat as a key opportunity to increase their influence in the upcoming midterms.
The showdown between Pappas and Manzur marked the conclusion of a lengthy six-month primary season, which highlighted various high-profile victories for the far-left over centrist candidates. This ongoing ideological struggle shapes the future of the Democratic Party.
“All he wants to do is just get his little cushy job and go to D.C. Go to all these parties and these restaurants and just do whatever the bare minimum is,” criticizes Manzur in a Fox News Digital interview.
Manzur, a scientist with a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, supported universal health care, a minimum wage hike to at least $20, abolition of ICE, and the end of U.S. military aid to Israel. She criticizes Pappas for his connections with AIPAC, labeling him a “genocide enabler.”
Pappas, supported by established party members and unions, counters by highlighting his track record since entering Congress in 2018. He emphasizes a system perceived as “rigged for billionaires” and criticizes current U.S.-Israel relations under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Israel’s a historic ally of the United States, the only democracy in the region,” Pappas remarked. Despite this, he expressed disapproval of Netanyahu’s recent actions.
As Pappas prepares for the general election against former Sen. John E. Sununu or former Sen. Scott Brown, he remains focused on uniting the Democratic base. He stresses New Hampshire’s pragmatic voter base, which operates between the political extremes.
Pappas concludes, “Democrats are coming together regardless of how these primaries are shaking out because they understand where the real fight is. This is an election here in New Hampshire that’s going to determine the balance of power in the United States Senate.”
