Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, addressed questions regarding left-wing streamer Hasan Piker and his controversial comments about Hamas on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Host Kristen Welker asked Raskin about divisions within the Democratic party related to Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s connection with Piker.
Raskin downplayed the issue, stating, “I don’t even know if Hasan Piker considers himself a Democrat. I know he attacked me for campaigning with other Democrats in Michigan. I think all of that is an irrelevant distraction.” He emphasized that nobody supports Hamas, described as a terrorist organization that carried out an attack on Israel in October.

Natalie Baldassarre, national press secretary for the Republican National Committee, commented on Piker’s influence within Democratic politics. She stated that his support for socialist candidates may become a liability for the party. Baldassarre warned, “Unless Democrats hit the brakes, every candidate on the ballot will have to answer for socialists’ outrageous beliefs that will bankrupt our country and strip every American of safety, sanity, and freedom.”
Hasan Piker has been a notable figure in Democratic campaigns, supporting candidates like Abdul El-Sayed. However, he has faced criticism for comments comparing Hamas and Israel. During an appearance on “Pod Save America,” Piker expressed a preference for voting in favor of Hamas over Israel, framing it as a choice for lesser evil.
Abdul El-Sayed has addressed the controversy, asserting that Piker does not officially speak for his campaign, although he has not fully disavowed the streamer. El-Sayed stated he wants to engage Piker’s audience in the electoral process.
Other Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, have responded to the attention on Piker. Ocasio-Cortez described it as “absolutely ludicrous,” and Jayapal suggested that engaging with Piker’s audience is important despite disagreements.
