Rescue Operation Evacuates Villagers from Flooded Cave in Laos

In a dramatic rescue operation in Laos, four villagers trapped in a flooded cave for ten days have been safely evacuated. The rescue took place with the collaborative efforts of Lao and Thai rescue teams, and the news of the successful operation was shared via social media along with photos.

The villagers entered the cave last week in search of valuable minerals but found themselves trapped due to sudden flash flooding. Two villagers remain missing, with rescue teams committed to continuing their search.

A rescue volunteer group from Laos shared that the water levels in the cave have receded, allowing for the evacuation process. Divers had been providing essentials like food and water throughout the ordeal. Video footage of Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtang shows villagers being assisted out of the cave, their bodies covered in mud, and the emotional moment as they collapse on the ground, embraced by relieved rescuers.

The first villager was evacuated on Friday, following an operation lasting around 30 minutes. Footage captured his challenging journey out of the cave, emerging from water with a diver, then navigating through the narrow, flooded passage.

Five villagers found alive were identified by their first names: Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing, and Laen. Rescue teams were not just from Laos and Thailand; they were joined by colleagues from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, France, and Australia. These teams included professionals who had previously participated in the complex 2018 rescue of schoolboys in northern Thailand.

Kengkaj Bongkawong, head of the Thai rescue group Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin, stated that plans are underway to explore deeper parts of the cave, approximately 20 to 25 meters beyond where survivors were located. Despite the heavily flooded conditions, teams are determined to locate the missing villagers.
