Rick Jackson Wins Republican Runoff for Georgia Governor

Rick Jackson has emerged as the victor in the Republican runoff for Georgia governor, according to CBS News projections. Jackson, a healthcare executive turned politician, defeated Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to secure the GOP nomination, marking the end of a particularly heated primary season in Georgia.

Jackson’s campaign distinguished itself through significant personal investment and a compelling narrative. He pledged up to $50 million of his own funds and spent over $50 million on television advertising, exceeding all other candidates. His personal story resonated with many voters, highlighting his rise from poverty, navigating multiple foster homes and schools, and living in Atlanta’s public housing before founding Jackson Healthcare, a successful business enterprise.

The campaign saw high-profile endorsements. Attorney General Chris Carr, who placed fourth in the May primary, endorsed Jackson, praising him as an outsider with the potential to further Georgia’s progress. Additionally, Texas Senator Ted Cruz endorsed Jackson shortly before the runoff.

Burt Jones, initially the frontrunner, had significant backing from President Trump, who joined him in campaign efforts and advocated for him since 2025. Jones, a long-serving political figure in Georgia, faced strong challenges from Jackson’s lawsuits. Jackson contested a fundraising mechanism that favored Jones, resulting in federal court action blocking Jones’ leadership committee from raising further funds. Additionally, defamation claims arose from accusations by Jones’ campaign that Jackson was involved in controversial medical practices.

Despite these challenges, Jackson’s campaign maintained strength, and personal investment played a crucial role. The race was less about differentiating on policy, as both candidates had similar agendas, focusing on tax cuts, law enforcement support, immigration control, and education ideology. Ultimately, the contest centered around personal narratives and political endorsements.

With this victory, Rick Jackson is set to compete against Democratic nominee and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election scheduled for November.
