Riley Gaines has commended WNBA player Sophie Cunningham for her bold stance against biological men competing in women’s sports. Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer and host of “The Riley Gaines Show,” highlighted Cunningham’s courage considering the league’s progressive environment.
Gaines stated, “It’s easy to say that men shouldn’t play in women’s sports. But for Sophie Cunningham, in the context of the WNBA, it’s incredibly difficult. Her courage is immense.” She praised Cunningham as the first active female athlete in a pro league to take this public stand.

Recently, Cunningham discussed her views on transgender athletes in women’s sports with ESPN. She clarified that while she supports extending love, she believes in honesty and wants to protect young female athletes from competing against biological men.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about hating trans. But I never once said that,” Cunningham emphasized.
Following her remarks, Cunningham gained backing from Republican figures like Senators Ted Cruz and Eric Schmitt, along with several women’s sports advocates.
Gaines observed that Cunningham isn’t motivated by fame. “I don’t think Sophie is saying this for fame,” she mentioned, highlighting that Cunningham’s views might jeopardize opportunities for her in the Indiana Fever team.

Jennifer Sey, CEO of the pro-women’s sportswear brand XX-XY Athletics, expressed her intention to sign Cunningham. “She’s a fantastic athlete with an incredible personality,” Sey said.
The ad campaign “Dear Nike” by XX-XY Athletics encouraged sports brands to oppose biological males in women’s competitions. Cunningham’s engagement with this campaign led to future collaborations, despite a delayed connection on social media.
