The Republican National Committee (RNC) is intensifying its efforts to obtain information from New Jersey election officials concerning voter roll records. The RNC is particularly focused on records related to noncitizens found on the state’s voter lists. Legal action is being considered to acquire the desired details.
On Wednesday, the RNC issued formal notices of National Voter Registration Act violations to New Jersey’s secretary of state and officials in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties. These notices demand records associated with noncitizen removals, checks on citizenship, and other voter roll maintenance operations. The officials have been given a deadline of September 15 to release the records, failing which, legal proceedings could be initiated.
Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill acknowledged what the RNC uncovered through public records requests: noncitizens are on New Jersey’s voter rolls,said RNC Chairman Joe Gruters.Voters deserve answers, and the RNC insists that election officials comply with the law by handing over the records or facing possible legal action.
Governor Sherrill disclosed that a technical error in the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) system resulted in approximately 6,600 noncitizens appearing on voter rolls. Out of them, as many as 400 participated in voting. The RNC alleges that records from Bergen County confirm the removal of 134 noncitizens from voter listings between January 2023 and August 2026. Of these, 91 were tied to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
Sherrill’s administration has revealed that a software glitch at the MVC wrongly registered about 6,600 individuals to vote from June 2023 to June 2024. This occurred before Sherrill assumed office. As per the state’s findings, 5,100 people were removed from voter rolls due to a lack of individual registration or eligibility attestation. Around 1,450 registrations were marked for additional scrutiny.
Further, the state identified around 340 individuals who had voted following the erroneous registration. Additionally, 220 voters affected by the error had been previously registered or provided separate attestations indicating valid registration. Sherrill has directed county election officials to address these issues before the November election.
The governor has also criticized the Trump administration’s endeavors to expand federal oversight over state voter rolls and has opposed federal requests to access nonpublic voter data, describing these actions as phishing expeditions in New Jersey.
The investigation into the MVC’s software error is ongoing, according to the governor’s office. Neither the RNC nor New Jersey state officials, including Sherrill’s office, have commented on the issue’s latest developments.
