Roblox’s Commitment and Challenges in Ensuring Safety and Privacy

Roblox emphasizes its commitment to creating a secure, healthy, and suitable environment for its users. A spokesperson from Roblox highlighted this commitment in a statement to NBC News, asserting that recent claims about the platform misrepresent its operations and overlook the proactive measures being introduced to enhance online safety.

However, the company’s age verification process has become a controversial topic due to privacy concerns. Roblox collaborates with a third-party vendor, Persona, for age verification, which claims to delete biometric data right after estimating ages. Despite this, challenges persist with inaccurate age estimations and attempts to bypass the system by users.

Globally, age estimation tools are gaining attention as social platforms face criticism for not adequately protecting children. This move, while seen as necessary, has raised concerns among digital rights and free speech advocates about potential privacy and security risks.

Roblox’s AI technology estimates ages based on facial structures, aiming to be more accurate than traditional methods like selecting an age from a dropdown. Eliza Jacobs, Roblox’s Vice President of Safety Product Policy, expressed optimism about its accuracy, stating that self-declared age selections are no longer sufficient.

For users who experience incorrect age estimations, Roblox allows appeals. Users can update their account age by providing a government ID, while parents can manually adjust the ages for their children’s accounts. The company employs a system of continuous age estimation to catch discrepancies between account and behavioral age, analyzing play time, game choices, and chat language.

Jacobs acknowledged the imperfections of the system, emphasizing the balance needed to correct errors while preventing system abuse.

“I do like to hear that Roblox is taking it seriously, that there are more guardrails with privacy,” said Krista Carroll, a parent. “Hopefully more businesses and more companies will use this as the model to say this is what we need to do to protect our kids.”

Despite safety initiatives, recent changes have sparked tension within the community of over 24,500 developers. These changes include new publishing requirements like ID verification, two-factor authentication, and a financial deposit for making games available to players under 16.

The measures aim to prevent harmful content and ensure developers’ commitment to safe publishing. Roblox argues that the financial commitment ensures developers are genuinely invested in the community, though some users argue it poses challenges for small developers.

Jacobs noted that rigorous review processes are in place for games offered to Kids and Select accounts to catch any policy violations. The company also receives input from its Community Safety Council, consisting of global creators who help refine safety measures. However, Jacobs acknowledged that some changes might not be universally welcomed.

“We have a long-term vision of safety and civility on the platform that we’re building towards that we believe in,” Jacobs stated. “It’s OK if some people are not always happy about that.”
