Staying Alive in Later Years

As people grow older, maintaining one’s health and well-being becomes an art. The goal is largely to avoid making wrong choices. Many aspects of this behavior revolve around the word “don’t.” Preventive strategies can lead to a safer, albeit less exciting, existence.

I want to clarify that failing to follow these principles isn’t morally incorrect. It simply might lead to hardship.

“Run when you hear ‘We must do this again.'”

This phrase often crops up at the end of an uninspiring social gathering you attended reluctantly. When someone cheerfully remarks, “We must do this again,” take it lightly. No one truly holds that sentiment.

“Marry above your station.”

More often than not, people unintentionally follow this guideline. And perhaps by now, you have acknowledged this pattern.

“Don’t forget to bestow confidence.”

Providing reassurance is invaluable. Telling a loved one, “You can do it,” when they doubt themselves in exams, speeches, or creative challenges can be more impactful than mere declarations of love. This expression signifies wholehearted love and a desire for them to attain personal fulfillment.

“Observe the moth.”

Virginia Woolf’s essay “The Death of the Moth” depicts the moth struggling at a windowpane during its final moments. Woolf admires its plight with both pity and awe. Its struggle possesses a unique beauty. Through its perseverance, the moth seems to acknowledge that death is inevitable and mighty.
