Russia initiated a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight leading into Monday, causing at least seven fatalities. Ukrainian authorities reported this incident shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had alerted the public to an impending assault.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, revealed on Telegram that 24 others sustained injuries during the attack. Rescue operations were underway, particularly in the Podilskyi district, where a residential building partially collapsed. In Darnytsia district, several multistory buildings suffered damage, trapping residents under the debris.
Tkachenko emphasized the civilian nature of the targeted areas, stating, “These are residential buildings. Places where people slept and lived their ordinary lives.” The attack continued into the early hours of Monday, with the city echoing with the sounds of ballistic and cruise missiles, alongside drone involvement. Civilians sought safety in metro stations as the explosions continued.
The recent attack follows closely on the heels of a previous assault by Russia that claimed at least 31 lives in Kyiv just last week. President Zelenskyy reiterated his plea to Western allies for enhanced air defenses for Ukraine. He emphasized the urgent need for more Patriot missile systems, highlighting that without adequate replenishment, Russia would feel empowered to extend its ongoing four-year conflict. In a Sunday post on Telegram, Zelenskyy stressed the significance of reinforcing Ukraine’s defenses.
