On Tuesday morning, Russian airstrikes targeted Kyiv, killing at least two people and wounding seven. This attack marks the end of a temporary pause in hostilities, which was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during talks with President Trump’s envoys.
The resumption of airstrikes followed a diplomatic visit by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who engaged in discussions with leaders of both countries. Despite their efforts, including ‘meaningful discussions’, the conflict continues, as highlighted by the immediate airstrikes following the cessation of the brief truce.
According to Kyiv authorities, the strikes caused extensive damage to buildings, including a five-story apartment block and ignited vehicles in the Podilskyi district. Several people remain trapped in a residential building, and rescue operations are underway.
Poland’s air force responded by conducting ‘preventive operations’ due to Russia’s missile attacks, resulting in flight suspensions from Lublin Airport.
Following Sunday’s talks, Trump’s envoys expressed optimism about diplomatic progress. Witkoff noted that discussions had been ‘substantive and important’, despite acknowledging the necessity for compromises by both Russia and Ukraine to reach a resolution.
Prior to the envoys’ departure, President Trump had indicated they carried a proposal to promote peace. A senior Ukrainian official noted discussions included strategies for coping through the upcoming winter. Meanwhile, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that U.S. representatives had ‘serious preparations’ for their trip and brought forward potential settlement ideas, without providing specifics.
