Ruston Kelly, a 37-year-old country music singer, has committed to sobriety following a life-threatening golf cart accident in June. Kelly recently shared his reflections on social media, detailing his journey and the struggles he faced.
After relapsing, Kelly took to Instagram to post an image of a gold Narcotics Anonymous token. This token, engraved with ‘My gratitude speaks when I care and when I share with others the NA way,’ represents his milestones in recovery.
Kelly explained that he had previously believed he was only addicted to amphetamines. ‘I told myself back in 2021 that as long as I wasn’t using amphetamines, I would be on the right “clean” journey for myself,’ he wrote.
He admitted that he initially included alcohol and THC in his abstinence, believing it was necessary. However, he later began to see himself as distinct from traditional addiction definitions, focusing solely on his amphetamine dependency.
In June, a golf cart accident severely injured Kelly, breaking his arm. ‘After my accident, I was given fentanyl, morphine, ketamine, dilaudid, and oxycodone for three days, leaving with a month-long prescription of Percocet,’ Kelly recounted.
Kelly described how this led to a new dependency, ‘I was chewing them in the pharmacy before I walked out the door. I was hiding how many I was taking,’ he confessed. This dependency awakened feelings he hadn’t experienced in years.
On July 26, Kelly decided to make a change, declaring, ‘For my soul, my wife, my family, my art and career, and my people, I admitted that I will forever have a substance abuse disease.’
Kelly committed to abstaining from all drugs and alcohol, including THC. ‘I am 3 days completely clean and sober again, and intend to remain this way forever, one day at a time,’ he stated.
