Ryan Reynolds and Dr. Drew Debate the 1980s

Ryan Reynolds recently shared his unflattering view of the 1980s, pointing out the era’s turbulent nature beyond its pop culture façade. In an interview with Variety, the ‘Deadpool’ star argued that nostalgia clouds the real challenges of that decade.

Reynolds remarked, ‘The ’80s was a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a mess… and people forget that.’ He highlighted sociopolitical tensions, such as the Cold War’s influence.

His comments led to a disagreement with Dr. Drew Pinksy on the ‘Actual Friends’ podcast. Dr. Drew contended that Reynolds was mistaken, suggesting he confused the 1980s with the more tumultuous 1970s.

Dr. Drew said, ‘The ’80s was this huge relief. Yes, early hatred for Reagan existed, but overall, it was a period of optimism and celebration.’

Dr. Drew posed a question about the decade’s essence, ‘What happened to fun?’ He believed the 1980s were a time of enjoyment, contrary to Reynolds’ portrayal.

Reynolds expressed his remarks during the promotion of his Apple TV film, ‘Mayday,’ which is set in 1987. This discussion reflects diverse perceptions of past eras, questioning how nostalgia shapes our view of history.
