Sam Burns, at 30 years old, has secured another automatic spot on the U.S. Presidents Cup team. This marks his third Presidents Cup appearance and his fifth consecutive representation of Team USA across both the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup.
As an esteemed golfer, Burns has been a part of U.S. teams since he first represented his country at the Junior Ryder Cup when he was 18. With five PGA Tour victories, he is a top American golfer recognized by avid fans. His journey in golf is not isolated; his family now shares those experiences alongside him.
Bearing witness to his father’s accomplishments, Burns’ young son Bear will accompany him this year. Bear, born in April 2024 along with his sister Belle, is still too young to comprehend his father’s achievements. Yet, Burns is enthusiastic about the notion that his children will witness him don the USA team colors, a significant honor in his eyes.
“It is such an honor for me to be able to represent your country and also play for ultimately something a lot bigger than yourself,” Burns expressed.
Participating in team events like the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup is different from the typical individual competitions. Burns emphasized that those special weeks leave a lasting impression when players reflect on their careers. Despite not being as renowned among casual sports enthusiasts, his achievements illustrate his standing in the sport.
Besides his five PGA Tour victories, he narrowly missed major wins recently, finishing second at the U.S. Open and third at The Open. Although his journey to a major title continues, golf remains secondary to other aspects of his life.
Fatherhood has imparted new perspectives on life and challenges Burns in unexpected ways. He openly shared his journey as a father of two and the changes it brought to his viewpoint. Understanding and giving attention to his children has become a priority.
“You feel like they want your attention and they want your love. So, it’s really special to be a dad for sure,” Burns reflected.
This year, family commitments nearly kept him from The Open, but with his wife’s support, he competed and nearly won. The balancing act of family and career highlights his dedication without compromising familial bonds.
Burns’ Christian faith also plays a crucial role as he navigates the highs and lows of professional golf. The sport, he noted, teaches life lessons—perseverance through hard work and the importance of not being solely defined by one’s endeavors.
“You can hit really good shots and end up in bad places, or bad shots end up in good places,” he stated, acknowledging the unpredictability of the game.
For Burns, faith, family, and country are central to his life. Golf is significant, yet he maintains an understanding of what’s truly important. As he prepares for Medinah next month with his son Bear by his side, Burns remains focused on contributing to Team USA with passion and pride.
