San Diego Mosque Attack: Remembering Three Heroes

Three men are being remembered for their bravery at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Mansour Kaziha, Amin Abdullah, and Nadir Awad sacrificed their lives to protect others during a tragic event.

The Victims’ Lives and Legacies

Mansour Kaziha, known as the mosque’s shopkeeper, was beloved for his generosity. He often gave candy to children for free. Kaziha had been a part of the Islamic Center since the 1980s. He managed the center’s store, engaging with community members and contributing to events like Ramadan dinners.

Amin Abdullah, a dedicated security guard, took his role seriously. His daughter shared how Abdullah would skip meals to maintain vigilance. Inspired by past tragedies like the New Zealand mosque shooting in 2019, Abdullah’s focus was always on the safety of others.

Nadir Awad lived nearby the mosque and responded swiftly when the attack began. Known for his cheerful nature, he was deeply involved with the community. Awad’s actions during the attack demonstrated his willingness to help and protect.

Community’s Response and Concerns

The attack has sparked grief and outrage within the community, as the incident is being investigated as a hate crime. Community leaders link recent violence to anti-Muslim rhetoric prevalent in various spheres, including online and among some politicians.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations reported an increase in incidents of anti-Muslim bias. A report by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found a concerning rise in such rhetoric from political figures.

“When you place a target on a community, incidents like this are an outcome,” said Raqib Naik, the center’s executive director.

Increased Security Measures

The Islamic Center of San Diego has been proactive about security due to increasing threats. Security measures have been tightened since the 2019 New Zealand attack, including armed officers and active shooter drills. The recent tragedy underscores the need for more comprehensive security strategies involving multiple attackers.

The community hopes for increased patrols and greater police presence to safeguard all places of worship. The attack has highlighted vulnerabilities that many faith-based organizations face, emphasizing a call for unity against such violence.
