On Wednesday night, the New England Patriots faced the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. They watched as the Seahawks celebrated by raising a Super Bowl banner, a win achieved against the Patriots previously. Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye was aiming for a positive start to the new season, seeking a measure of revenge for the past.
Instead, the game ended with the Seahawks’ cornerback Josh Jobe making a crucial interception in the end zone. This play resulted in a 13-10 victory for Seattle. It was the third interception by the Patriots quarterback and ensured a thrilling victory for Seattle in their season opener.
Maye, who was an MVP frontrunner last season, converted a fourth-and-9 late in the game to get the Patriots within field goal range. However, two of his fourth-quarter drives ended with interceptions, giving Drew Lock and the Seahawks opportunities to regain momentum.
Lock stepped in for the Seahawks after starting quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury only five snaps into the game. The Seahawks fans, known as the ’12s’, were initially subdued when Lock entered. Yet, his effective performance turned the game around, capitalizing on Maye’s errors.
During a pivotal play on third-and-5 from Seattle’s 16-yard line, Maye opted to attempt a high-stakes pass to Mack Hollins instead of playing safe. Jobe seized the opportunity with an impressive catch, staying in bounds to secure the win for the Seahawks.
Maye’s performance was unpredictable. He completed 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards, throwing a touchdown to rookie tight end Eli Raridon — the first touchdown of the NFL season. However, the three interceptions were significant mistakes.
The Seahawks benefitted from Maye’s risky decisions. They were prepared for overtime with an easy field goal but Jobe’s interception sealed their victory instead. Lock’s readiness to replace Darnold played a vital role. Lock achieved 16 completions on 22 attempts for 187 yards, including a touchdown pass and no turnovers.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, also contributed notably. His eight receptions for 122 yards included a pivotal 45-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-1. This score followed Maye’s initial interception intended for Patriots receiver Romeo Doubs, and tied the game.
Maye was looking to retake the lead, but veteran safety Julian Love intercepted a pass meant for Pop Douglas. This interception set up the Seahawks for the eventual game-winning field goal by Jason Myers, a 26-yard effort.
Concerns now focus on Darnold’s health. He sustained an injury when sacked early in the game, which led to noticeable limping. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is awaiting further information on Darnold’s condition. Similarly, Patriots’ A.J. Brown, who was acquired from the Eagles, left the game due to an ankle injury after making three catches for 26 yards.
The Seahawks hope for a swift recovery for both Darnold and Brown as they look to build on this opening victory.
