A judge ordered that a 15-year-old be held in juvenile detention in connection with the incident. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and the number of individuals involved. Police have identified two participants as the teenager in custody and the deceased 19-year-old. Prosecutors requested the teenager’s detention, which King County Superior Court Judge Tanya Thorp approved. The youth’s public defender, Hong Tran, refrained from commenting. The teenager faces charges of three counts of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree unlawful firearm possession. He has no prior records in the county, according to King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesperson Casey McNerthney.
Gary Gatewood Jr., a Seattle youth coordinator, acknowledged knowing the teen but provided no further information. Prosecutors expect to receive initial police investigation findings on Wednesday and plan to decide on formal charges shortly thereafter.
The Space Needle, a landmark near the site of the shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival, set the stage for the unfolding tragedy. Assistant Chief of Investigations Nicole Powell confirmed two groups exchanged gunfire, reinforcing potential gang involvement.
A police officer observed the teenager firing into the crowd during the festival, according to court documents. Following the shooting, the teenager and the 19-year-old were detained, although the latter succumbed to gunshot wounds. Authorities continue to search for a third possible suspect.
The King County medical examiner released the identities of the deceased: Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19; Ashley Whitehead, 56; and Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44. All died from gunshot wounds. Four others were wounded but are in stable condition. Witness accounts suggest confusion between the sounds of gunshots and firecrackers, captured in videos where festival-goers are seen fleeing frantically.
Food vendor Hana Kim described the chaos during the shooting. Festival attendees sought shelter under her tent. In videos shared online, police are seen responding while parents shield their children. Kim recounted her instinctive reaction to protect her family, causing her to injure her knee. She and her brother assisted in evacuating those who sought refuge at their stall.
Kim received a call from a thankful woman who had sheltered at their stall, highlighting the shock and emotional impact of the incident on those involved.
